Slugging
Slugging is a skincare trend that involves applying an occlusive layer, usually petroleum jelly, as the final step in your night-time routine to seal in moisture. Named for the shiny, slug-like appearance it creates, the method gained popularity on TikTok for its deep hydration and skin-repairing benefits.
It works by locking in moisture and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Ideal for dry or compromised skin, slugging helps strengthen the skin barrier, soften rough areas, and soothe irritation—especially useful in colder weather or after using exfoliants or retinoids.
To slug effectively:
Begin with a clean face and apply lightweight hydrating products, such as serums containing hyaluronic acid. Then, gently layer a thin coat of petroleum jelly over your entire face to lock in the moisture.
Slugging is most suitable for dry or normal skin types. Those with oily or acne-prone skin should be cautious, as occlusives can trap excess oil and worsen breakouts. When used appropriately, slugging can help you wake up with plumper, healthier-looking skin.
