Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common in office complaints and can present as a clinical challenge. We often speak about the face, but how do we treat hyperpigmentation on the body?Hyperpigmentation is caused by the excess production of melanin in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can be localized, as in post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma, or more diffuse. Diffuse pigmentation tends to be associated with metabolic causes or certain medications or malignancy. It is most important to identify and treat any underlying conditions. The first-line treatment for hyperpigmentation involves topical formulations of conventional agents such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, and glycolic acid followed by oral formulations of therapeutic agents such as tranexamic acid.BBL, Broad Band Light, uses intense pulsed light to target pigment and vessels within the skin. The pigment is initially darkened and then diminishes over the course of 2-3 weeks. A series of 3-6 treatments one month apart is optimal to reduce pigmentation on the arms, chest, abdomen, back and legs. BBL also helps to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin as well.

What to expect

The sensation of BBL is described as a tiny, rubber band being snapped against the skin and is generally tolerable. Topical anaesthetic numbing cream can be used to help in such situations. If there is an abundance of redness or sun damage, a lot of pigment will come to the surface after treatment with BBL. It can look like coffee grounds stuck on the skin and can has for 3-5 days on the face and up to 3 weeks on the body.

After treatment care

After treatment, irritants like exfoliants, retinoids and shaving should be avoided for 1 week. Sunscreen is essential and should include a broadband UVA and UVB protection with a minimum SPF of 30. Do not exposure your skin to direct sunlight for 14 days as the area can be more susceptible to sunburn during this time. After BBL treatments, skin will look more youthful, with improvement in skin tone and texture. Sun damage, age spots, redness and general skin tone will look better for beautiful flawless skin.
