Occlusives
What are they?
Occlusives are skincare ingredients that create a barrier on the skin’s surface to seal in moisture and prevent water from evaporating. They're especially useful for dry or dehydrated skin, as they help maintain hydration levels. Common examples include petrolatum, shea butter, beeswax, and rich plant oils.
How do they work?
Occlusives strengthen the skin’s barrier by sealing in moisture and shielding it from harsh elements like cold air or pollution. They’re most effective when layered over humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which first draw water into the skin.
While highly effective for dry or compromised skin, some occlusives can feel heavy—making them ideal for nighttime use or dry seasons. For oily or acne-prone skin, lighter options like squalane or dimethicone offer similar benefits without clogging pores.
Whether used as a balm, oil, or cream, occlusives are an important part of a balanced routine, keeping skin soft, hydrated, and protected.
