Lymphatic Drainage
What is it?
Lymphatic drainage is the body’s way of flushing out toxins, waste, and excess fluid via the lymphatic system. In skincare, this term often refers to gentle massage techniques that help stimulate lymph flow, reduce puffiness, and enhance circulation and skin clarity.
The lymphatic system—made up of vessels, nodes, and organs—relies on muscle movement and pressure to function, since it doesn’t have a pump like the heart. When flow slows down, fluid can accumulate, especially in areas like the under-eyes, cheeks, and jawline, leading to puffiness or a dull complexion.
How does it work?
Lymphatic drainage uses gentle, sweeping motions to encourage the movement of lymph fluid. This can reduce puffiness, enhance circulation, and give the skin a more sculpted, refreshed look. It’s commonly used after cosmetic procedures to minimise swelling, but also fits well into daily skincare or facial massage routines for detox and radiance.
In clinical settings, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is used post-surgery or treatment. At home, tools like gua sha or facial rollers can aid lymph flow. When done regularly and with the right technique, they can ease tension and promote a healthier, more glowing complexion.
Benefits
Lymphatic drainage can temporarily reduce puffiness—especially around the eyes and midsection—and may improve skin clarity by boosting circulation and removing cellular waste. It’s also helpful for managing mild fluid retention or dullness, and some people find it benefits congested or breakout-prone skin by keeping the system flowing smoothly.
Because the lymphatic system sits just below the skin’s surface, the technique should always be gentle—light pressure works best. Vigorous massage isn’t necessary and can actually be counterproductive.
While it won’t dramatically alter skin structure or fix deeper concerns, lymphatic drainage can be a relaxing, supportive addition to a skincare routine—leaving the skin looking fresher, less puffy, and more energised.
