Dermis
What is it?
The dermis is central to what we associate with healthy skin. Collagen gives the skin firmness, elastin provides flexibility, and blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients while helping regulate body temperature. It also houses structures like hair follicles, sweat glands, and oil glands, all of which support the skin’s health and appearance.
Unlike the constantly renewing epidermis, the dermis regenerates more slowly. Over time—due to aging or environmental stress—collagen and elastin production decreases, causing the dermis to thin and lose structure. This results in visible signs of aging, such as fine lines, sagging, and decreased skin density.
How is it treated?
Topical skincare products can’t fully reach the dermis on their own, but certain active ingredients—like retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C—can stimulate the fibroblasts within this layer, encouraging collagen production and improving skin firmness over time.
To directly target the dermis, more advanced treatments such as microneedling, laser resurfacing, and radiofrequency therapy are used. These methods create controlled micro-injuries that activate the skin’s healing response, promoting smoother, more resilient skin.
The dermis also plays a key role in regulating inflammation, immune function, and wound healing. When inflammation becomes chronic, it can accelerate signs of aging and worsen skin conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea. Supporting the skin barrier, reducing oxidative stress, and using calming, antioxidant-rich products can help maintain a healthier dermal environment.
