Fading the Signs of Summer: How to Remove Unwanted Pigmentation

After a season of sunshine, many of us notice our skin looks different, perhaps with a layer of new freckles, dark patches across the cheeks, forehead, and body, or an overall uneven tone. While a golden tan fades, the pigmentation left behind can be stubborn and difficult to treat.
Even with diligent SPF application, UV rays penetrate the skin, triggering melanocytes (the pigment-producing cells) to overproduce melanin. This can lead to sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory pigmentation. The good news? We know exactly how to treat pigmentation, with clinically proven ways to remove sun spots and rejuvenate your face and body after the summer holidays.
Why Post-Summer is the Perfect Time for Pigmentation Treatment
During the summer months, high UV exposure increases the risk of rebound pigmentation if treated too aggressively during the sunny months. Once the season changes and the UV decreases, your skin is better able to tolerate targeted procedures, like laser or peels, making autumn one of the best windows for safe and effective treatment.
Our Pigmentation Treatment Options
There are different ways to remove pigmentation, and you’ll discuss your unique treatment plan with Maryam or one of our Aestheticians during your consultation. Depending on your skin type, pigmentation pattern, and goals, we may recommend:
- BBL (Broadband Light) Therapy One of the most effective solutions for removing pigmentation and uneven tone on the face and body, BroadBand Light is a customizable treatment of light that is absorbed by chromophores in the skin to destroy superficial pigmentation such as brown spots and seal dilated blood vessels. BBL™ also has a regenerative effect in the skin’s dermis, promoting collagen and elastin production to tighten the skin and improve skin texture.
- Moxi Laser
Moxi removes pigmentation and is the next generation in skin rejuvenation to achieve beautiful, radiant, glowing skin. Moxi is a gentle, fractional non-ablative diode laser resurfacing treatment that is safe on all skin types. Moxi treatments utilise 1927 nm laser energy to trigger the skin’s natural repair process and enhance collagen and elastin production. Moxi improves skin texture, reduces pigmentation, and improves the appearance of fine lines and pores. - Melasma Protocol
This new treatment is personalised based on melasma severity, skin sensitivity, and lifestyle, with patients placed into Tier 1 or Tier 2. Tier 1 is focused on advanced management and is designed for moderate to severe melasma. This laser-led approach addresses both dermal and epidermal pigment, supports skin regeneration, and controls vascular triggers. Tier 2 is focused on more gentle management and is ideal for mild to moderate melasma or sensitive skin. Read more about this groundbreaking treatment here. - Chemical Peels
Using a tailored blend of acids such as AHAs, BHAs, or TCA, chemical peels exfoliate the outermost layer of skin, removing damaged cells and stimulating new, healthy skin. Our dermamelan depigmentation peel is a highly effective medical peel formulated to reduce pigmentation. Using a combination of acids and topical ingredients to treat acne scarring, sun damage and hyperpigmentation from melasma to reveal healthy, even skin. Dermamelan is safe to use on all skin types. - Medical-Grade Topical Treatments
Prescription creams and serums containing hydroquinone, retinoids, or vitamin C can gradually suppress melanin production, allowing pigmented cells to be replaced by fresh, even-toned skin. This is an excellent choice for melasma and mild pigmentation. Explore our vitamin C and retinol-based collections at MZ Skin.
Daily Habits to Prevent Pigmentation Returning
- Apply SPF daily: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply during prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Avoid peak sun: Seek shade between 11 am and 4 pm, when UV rays are strongest.
- Cover up: Wear UPF-rated clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors.
- Add antioxidants: Incorporate vitamin C, retinols, or tranexamic acid into your skincare to help suppress excess pigment production.
