Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of our skin and is determined by melanin, a pigment that gives skin its colour. The amount of melanin in our skin is influenced by genetics, but also by environmental factors such as UV exposure, hormones, and inflammation. Two common types of skin pigmentation are hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, resulting in dark spots or patches on the skin. Hypopigmentation occurs when there is a lack of melanin, resulting in lighter areas of skin.In the context of summer skin pigmentation, the most common type of hyperpigmentation is known as sun spots or age spots. These are caused by prolonged exposure to UV radiation from the sun.As the temperature rises, so does the risk of skin pigmentation due to sun exposure. While there is no sure fire way to prevent pigmentation completely, there are several measures you can take to minimize the risk of developing it. Here are a few preventive measures you can adopt this summer:

How to Prevent Skin Pigmentation:

Use Sunscreen:

SPF is you BFF! SPF is your first line of defence against pigmentation and other harmful effects of the sun. Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 before stepping out in the sun, and reapply it every two hours if you are going to be outside for extended periods.

Wear Protective Clothing:

Another way to prevent pigmentation is by wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved UV shirts and pants. This not only reduces the risk of sun damage but also keeps you cool and comfortable in hot weather.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours:

The sun's rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so it is best to minimizing activities during these peak hours. If you must be outside during this time, seek shade under an umbrella, tree, or any other cover that provides shade.

Post Summer Treatments: Try BBL and Moxi

Broadband Light (BBL) and Moxi treatments are non-invasive procedures that can help prevent and reduce pigmentation. BBL treatments use intense pulses of light to break up pigmentation while Moxi uses fractional laser technology to improve the texture and tone of the skin.

Stay Hydrated:

Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated, making it less susceptible to pigmentation. Additionally, staying hydrated keeps your skin looking healthy and radiant.By adopting these preventive measures, you can minimise the risk of developing pigmentation and keep your skin healthy and radiant throughout the summer.
